Thank you for the opportunity to clarify what this thread is about. You say that you are a cynic. Based upon the quote provided in your post, I believe you may mean that you are distrusting or disparaging of the motives of others. Based upon your tone and style I do not believe that you are showing contempt for standards of honesty and morality. These are of course two common definitions of cynical.

On this thread, we should not be concerned with the motives of the writer. We should only be concerned with the veracity of their arguments. Either they hold water or they don't. The argument stands on it own. It is entirely immaterial who said it, what their affiliation is, or how they might gain from convincing you of some truth.

IMHO, SI would be a terabyte lighter if we ignored all the posts that question the motives of the individual rather than the substance of what is said. Let us save that for another thread.

<we should give a clear definition of philosophy>
By philosophy I mean, the critical study of a particular branch of knowledge with a view to improving them. The quote you provided as a definition is just the opposite of what is acceptable on this thread. Thank you for pointing out an example of what we don't want to do. It is perfectly appropriate on certain other Coffee Shop threads. But it is not what we want here. It is the perspective of this thread that we are not at SI to engage in combat with each other. We are here to combat ignorance through rational discourse and in doing so help each other. The ignorance, for example, may be of the probability that Intel will meet earning expectations next quarter, how to keep your computer from crashing, how to scalp an extra 1/16th on a trade, or whatever is important to you.
