Welcome to Thread Philosophy of Discourse. We want to promote the positive! So, please feel free to post links to positive examples of exemplary discourse. We may then want to bookmark that person to see what they have to say in the future!

This is not like Thread Moron. Here, we don't want to bring attention to the negative.

If this works, its greatest benefit will be that any member of SI will be able to quickly check out this thread and find other people worth talking to.

Backround:
I noticed that another financial community chat service contained the following limitation in their Terms of Use: "Promotes bigotry, racism, hatred, or harm of any kind against any group or individual."

As a commercial, non-governmental, enterprise, I think that they have the right to limit the use of their service. For example, if a chat group operator wants to limit discourse only to those posts that are on topic I think they are entitled to do that. It is then up to me to decide if I want to be part of a community subject to such editorial control. This is how the free market operates. I would subscribe to such a service in many cases. It would be a tremendous value added.

Likewise, if I want to be part of a community where even the most despicable, insane or disjointed ideas is entitled to receive equal bandwidth, it's my dime.

Frankly, I would prefer if SI put up a firewall between the areas here. In marketing terms, they should differentiate and unbundled their product. (Hey, I want 10% of the net gain). One product would be strictly investment and business related. The same standards for discourse would prevail as at any business meeting or conference. So rude, disrespectful, or patently rhetorical statements would not be permitted. Can you imagine how ad hominem arguments such as you see today would go over in a business meeting? It would make S Investor 1000 times more valuable.

In the other area, they could have your basic, "Anything goes free for all." I have spent more time than most battling racism, bigotry, hatefulness, unkindness, and other forms of ignorance and stupidity. However, the way I achieve my goals is often as important to me as the goal itself.
As a science fiction writer and good friend of mine said, Sunlight is the best disinfectant.

Conclusion:
The purpose of Thread Philosophy of Discourse is to lift the quality of discussions, especially in areas outside the Coffee Shop. The quality of discussions will be judged on two criteria. First, if you ever took a philosophy class at a university you know what I'm thinking of, i.e., rational, logical, well-supported statements, including evidence to support the reasonableness of the assumptions or assertions. The other criterion is that of business decorum discussed above.

NB: You do not have to agree with the conclusion that your poster has drawn. You must respect the process by which they got to the conclusion. Secondly, please see Thread Maven to provide links to posters that demonstrate great knowledge of some area, company, technology, etc. In our thread, we are interested in Form.

Format
The first word in the first line of Your post should be the name of your Respected Poster followed by a few dashes and then the thread name of where the post came from. The rest of the first line should be either blank or provide the link to the post. The body of your post may contain any comments that you like. However, especially appreciated would be why the post meets our standards for quality discussion.
