Here's a tidbit of wisdom from some Chinese guy written a very very very long time ago.

"It is better to surprise your enemy from behind when seeking to slit his throat, as opposed to agitating him before doing so."

BTW Mitchell, my "cliché" as you like to refer to them, are intended to be 100% relevant, though I certainly grant anyone the intellectual incongruity to see otherwise. Everyone has their own style.
