A woman is awakened one morning by a furious pounding on her front door. She opens the door, and finds the local sheriff standing there.
"Mrs. Brown," says the sheriff, "The heavy rains have weakened the levee upstream from here. It's starting to give way, so you need to come with me and head for higher ground."
"No thank you Sheriff," she replies, "The Lord will see to my safety."
"Okay, Mrs. Brown. I have to get these other folks out of here, so good luck to you."
Well, sure enough the water begins to rise, and Mrs. Brown is soon forced up the the second floor of her house. As she stands in a window looking out over the vast waters, a National Guard boat spots her and heads over to her house.
"We're here to rescue you ma'am," says the Guardsman, "Climb on over to our boat."
"No thank you Sir," she replies, "The Lord will look after me."
As you can imagine, the water kept rising. By evening, the woman is fighting the birds for a perch on her chimney. From out of the distance an Army helicopter approaches. "Hold on Lady," calls the corpman, "we'll throw you a harness and pull you to safety."
"No thank you, I'll be fine," she yells to him "The good Lord will see to my wellbeing."
The helicopter flies off, and within the hour she drowns.
The time comes for Mrs. Brown to meet her Maker, and she's furious. "God," she says, "I've been a devout believer my entire life. I attend church regularly, I tithe, and I've raised my children in the teachings of your Holiness. How could you have failed me by letting me die in that flood?"
"What are you talking about," replies God, " I sent a car, I sent a boat, I sent a helicopter....". |
