I suggested '85 because it would cover the decline in 87, 90 and 94 and if it got you out and hopefully went short -- then you probably have a half-way decent system.

If it stayed long thru the 87 decline, would make it much more iffy.

Systems development is very challenging and frustrating at the same time. I will not use a position trading system that does not work on a variety of markets without fine-tuning the parameters -- need not be very profitable but it has to make some money. When you think about it cross-over systems and the like work on most markets as long as the market is trending. So it's the same concept -- others disagree with me on this.

Ever thought of reverse trading a system that loses a lot of money?? It seems logical but for some reason I cannot bring myself to do it. Schwager suggests that one ought to look at the merits of doing so -- but says that most traders cannot bring themselves to do so for psychological reasons-- since it would be using a system that they designed to make money and instead loses money -- and crossing that bridge to reverse trading the system seems to be one that they can't bring themselves to doing.

Probably not unlike many stock traders who if they went short every stock that they decided to go long and went long every stock that they decided to go short, would probably come out well ahead. But on the other hand how many would consciously make a decision when they want to buy a stock to say to themselves -- that given their past track record what they really ought to do is to short it--and vice versa.
