Maxman, it seems this practice of excluding the press and public from earnings cc is quite common, see the following excerpt from a Humana story ("investors" would mean BIG INVESTORS):

Humana Excludes Press, Public From Earnings Conference Call

Louisville, Kentucky, Oct. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Humana Inc.
excluded the news media and the public from the conference call
it conducted this morning after the managed health-care company
released its third-quarter earnings.

Analysts said the conference call was at 10 a.m. New York
time. Humana executives spoke to analysts and investors on the
call.

An operator handling calls into the conference said Humana
had reserved a limited number of lines, to be used only by
investors.
