Hey Arch, Ed is just following his hunches. The market can be quite scary and unpredictable. However, I agree that online brokers and the wealth of instant information can reduce the risk. The ability to easily place stop orders as a "safety net" also eases some of the downside exposure. I only own about five stocks at a time in my portfolio, so I can frequently adjust the safety net stops to prevent a catastrophic loss.

I agree that a lot of boomer bucks are pumping up the market, especially in the well known large caps. But I don't see much interest among my boomer peers in real serious investing in small companies, and I run with people who are pretty savy compared to the average american.

Non-US activity in the stock market is also contributing to the bull market for large caps. Anyone in the world with some dollars can open a online broker account and buy and sell any US stocks just as if they were based in the US. Hey, a large percent of people on SI are tuning in from around the world. No other stock market in the world is so open for participation by non-residents.
