Doug, thats what I like about this stock. Of all the obvious internet plays, this one seems to be alone on their competitive front - other than netg and some other emerging internet companies I mean. This in contrast to the auction companies ebay, onsl etc where yhoo is clearly targeting their space, and yhoo itself which might see msft come up with a portal (of course msft might be weakened by the DOJ but its an unknown), and aol.
Dclk dart technology is not something that Saatchi or whoever is going to be able to "whip up", it would be a stretch for them. There are companies such as Nielsen that I understand do targeted mkt research and some of that is analagous to dlck I believe (Im not familiar with neilsen product line, just an article I read) but really those traditional industries are so far away from internet technology I dont see them as a factor at all.
I was listening to a talk show yesterday where comments were made that classical music and other niche broadcast radio is disappearing due to cost limitations in favor of cheaper, more targeted internet channels. The point being worldwide targeted markets become a reality with the internet and some pretty sophisticated technology is needed to identify the demographics etc. Im sure if you really looked at SI you could get a lot more info on the participants and viewers of this site than the old 18-34 viewer category. And SI is a pretty broad site, what if you wanted to get, specifically, photographers or something, Im sure you could with the internet but with traditional media, no way. Anyway sorry for the rambling but its clear to me that dlck is addressing an entirely new space here and I cant see why any technology gorilla would want it, nor can I see the traditional ad companies moving in. I think dclk will prosper on its own. |
