That's about the clearest condensation of the airline business I've seen. Thanks Dennis!

I'm retired from Lockheed and can tell you that from a manufacturers standpoint it's equally hard to turn a profit. I was around in the '70s when Lockheed nearly went under thanks to a number of unfortunately timed incidents. You would know this, but others may not realize that the L1011 was the last commercial plane that Lockheed built. It was after they made the decision to get out of the commercial aircraft business that they started making some $$$ again.
