The primary danger I see in privatizing SS is in who makes the decisions about what qualifies as a suitable "qualifying" private investment for a portion of your SS fund.

I suspect the complexity of getting a law like this passed will include some really suspicious loopholes and special benefit line items that would favor one investment over another. I can see the mutual fund managers drooling over the billions, and I can see politicians "guiding" our selections toward their favored benefactors or their constituencies.

Can't you just see amendments that require a qualifying mutual fund doesn't invest in certain kinds of companies or in companies that engage in politically incorrect business practices?

"Sorry, you can't invest in MSFT - Bill Gates is a megalomaniac monopolist."

That kind of money and that kind of influence (read: Power) would be particularly dangerous in the hands of the political extremists.
