I think that, regardless of the actual severity of the Y2000 problem, the phenomenon will present a rationale for a major market pullback during the next year. It is a little early to tell whether this pullback will be relatively short lived or will in fact turn into a prolonged market downturn. Consequently, at this stage of the game, I am attempting to identify highly leveraged strategies which I can implement after the probable early winter run up that we generally see in January and February. Basically I am seeking to develop a shopping list of especially vulnerable equities, indices and their associated options. Of particular interest to me are overpriced equities which are not particularly visible speculations. Generally puts will be less expensive in these situations, consequently the leverage is greater and the risk is less. In other words, while prices of the Dells and Amazons are obviously in the realm of fantasy, many people realize this and consequently their puts are sky high and downside leverage is lower that desirable.
