(NO JOKE HERE EITHER)
Hmmm... one of those phrases you pick up without really recalling the epistemology... I recall as a youngster hearing a story (joke) about a guy with dog who gets on a bus and the story evolves, evolves, becomes more convoluted, adds crazy features....some object is lost.... eventually, guess who ends up with the lost item in mouth? the shaggy dog we forgot from the first of the story. I believe the term is in common usage. Most good humor is based on building a tension (even if implausable), and the 'punch line' gives an explosive release of that tension. Shaggy dog stories don't do it for me, because you can usually spot them a mile away, but you must endure til the end. BUT, who am I to judge? Any attempt at humor is better than none!

PS I re-read joke - I guess it wasnt really a shaggy dog story after all.
