We talked about cable modems vs. xDSL over copper wire to try to get higher internet access into the home on this thread a while back. Looks like after some fits and starts, the baby bells are starting to fight back before the cable modem is installed to any large degree.

A little followed telco equipment manufacturing company makes these xDSL modems. Westell is the company and they have a website at westell.com . All sorts of last mile solutions.

Recent deal with GTE (which is being bought by Bell Atlantic) is also on the website.

Bought some today at 8 1/8. Might be worth a look...
