At last I think I have it figured out.

From Data Races FAQs I have to conclude the following:
It appears that all voice calls made at the client using the DSVD protocol embedded with BeThere will have to be routed to the PBX unless they can be routed to another BeThere Sever or client attached the network. As RACE don't seem to support H.323 it is doubtful they will bother doing anything other than decompress the voice packets and send them over the PBX. There stuff is DSVD based.

From the RACE FAQ page:

9.Are Internet calls possible using the Be There! remote
access system?

Yes, if you are running an Internet phone. Be There! connects
you to the corporate LAN and the Internet phone works from
there. Delays in voice and data transmission will be
substantial using Internet phone over any modem
connections, including Be There!.

If you want to make an internet call you have to buy a "Netphone" from another vendor and run it over the top of the BeThere client. This of course makes BeThere's selling feature (multiplexing voice and data over the line) totally redundant. You will in effect be using BeThere's data channel for the internet call. RACE doen't appear to have any "VoIP or H.323 capability".

If an ISP offers this kind of solution to customers they will have to disclose that it will not offer them the ability to make calls over the internet - unless they buy a "Netphone" - but then you don't get multiplexed voice and data.. Yep - ISP's will be lining up to buy this.

What really got me annoyed about the last release is that they claimed to have a "VoIP solution for the last mile". If it is they certainly don't appear to have the technology to make ant use of it. At best they improved on DSVD.

I would have written the Press release this way.
" RACE improves on DSVD technology. May be some day we can apply it to a VoIP product - when we have one"
