Here's what I think! Ben saw an opportunity to make use of DSVD to connect a remote user to both the PBX and company LAN at the same time. Unfortunately, he never saw the potential in IP telephony. Let's face it everyone was talking ATM at the time anyway. I think RACE decided to implement DSVD between the client/server. In the meantime VoIP and VPN technology took off. Leaving BeThere in the dirt so to speak.
What I don't understand is why RACE didn't join the hunt. Yes, they would have to change direction, but most of their code should be reusable. All they had to do was change codecs to G.723 and implement H.323 at the server. Nothing that a good software architect/engineer couldn't have done in 6 months with a 1/2 decent team. They would still have a port density problem and no SS7- but.
IMO Liviakis is pretty much running the show and he doesn't give a hoot - he'll release anything.
