Interesting premise. However, I think it will not be mainstream till a couple of years down the road. Average Joe computer user doesn't have the appropriate equipment to take advantage of this type of technology. They will in a couple of years. A basic 3D interface will just not cut it. To really exploit this type of medium it will take much more advanced 3D modeling engines.

Bandwith is also a issue. 56K modems are a dated technology and have limited use. Cable modems and ADSL will spur growth in this medium and many others. People will begin to spend a lot more time online.

Lastly, if you are looking for a cool 3D computer game check ot "Duke Nukem". It is mindless entertainment and will be right up your alley if you like to blow sh*t up. "Who wants some?"
