I have had some lively conversations on the smaller features size, more die per wafer scenario and we have concluded that the actual die does not shrink as much as we are being led to believe. Unless it is a cost cutting shrink of an existing product, we are seeing more feature functionality on each chip which is almost beinging the chip back to the previous size prior to the new feature size technology being implemented. While the die may be getting slightly smaller, the demand for the die is getting even higher, causing the need for both the shrink and the increased wafer size.

If you look through the news today you will see the story on the Free PC website that is giving away PCs to qualified users (under $1k Compaq Presarios) in return for viewing paid adverstising. True, there is a qualification process but this is the first bell being wrung in the new age of advertising and commerce. Gone will be the days of the paper catalogs being indiscriminately mailed out.

You will now give away some financial and demographic information in return for a PC. Then you will be bombarded with targeted advertising right to your own hard drive. The key to all this is the advertisers will be subsidizing the cost of the PC and Internet Access in return for some of the least expensive advertisement costs.

This all boils down to more electronics in more homes which means more ICs for these electronics, expecially in computing power. I am sure these sytems will come with a minimum of RAM which will be upgraded as well as sound cards, grahics, etc. SO in the end, even if the die do get smaller, I rthink the demand for ICs in every part of our lives will outpace the shrinking phenomena. JMO.<GGG>

And yes, I think everyone should find out what the gotchas are to the free PCs<GGG>
