Jesus died somewhere between 33-36 C.E. But the earliest Gospel, Mark, was not written until 65-68 C.E., with Luke and Matthew written about 10 years later, and the Gospel of John a full 20-30 years after that (90-110 C.E.). His teachings, therefore, were transmitted by word of mouth for 3 decades. Scholars conclude, for this reason, that we have very little of the "actual" words of Jesus recorded in the New Testament. What we do have are the orally transmitted interpretations of those teachings by his earliest followers.
