Xylan Simplifies Network Management With X-Vision

CALABASAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 22, 1999--Xylan Corp. (Nasdaq:XYLN - news) Monday released X-Vision, an integrated suite of network management software designed to make managing a Xylan network easier.

The software allows network managers to create and implement policy-based subnetworks for a network in less than 10 minutes.

The NMS integrates once-separate network management applications to allow network managers to configure, diagnose, detect problems and set policies with one program and from one console, dramatically simplifying the management process.

Key features of the upgrade include:

-- Auto-discovery of Xylan switches to simplify the device
configuration and management;
-- Enhanced network segmentation capability allowing network
managers to easily create policy-based subnetworks for the entire
network;
-- Improved ATM and WAN services to simplify management and offer
more powerful configuration tools;
-- The advanced intelligent networking services allow network
managers to customize connections by QoS, virtual channel
properties, AAL-type and priority;
-- Integrated trap/event support to collect network traffic
statistics for dynamic monitoring and alert network managers when
thresholds are exceeded; and
-- Support for the Omni Switch/Router, Xylan's high-density,
feature-rich Gigabit Ethernet switch.

X-Vision comes with a new capability, Health View. It is standards-based, using SNMP to track the use of key switch resources like CPU, memory, CAM, module, port and backplane use. Health View is key to proactive network management. By monitoring the network's health, a network manager can identify potential bottlenecks and resolve issues before they bring a network down.

Mark Truhlar, vice president and general manager of Xylan's NMS and Voice over IP business unit, said, ''No network means no business. To minimize downtime, a network manager must isolate problems quickly. With Health View, we allow them to isolate problems down to the port level.''

Along with providing a better diagnostic tool, Xylan makes its NMS solution easier to use. The GUI comes with easy-to-use drag and drop functionality, allowing the network manager to define networkwide policies from one console with the click of a mouse.

The enhanced GUI also makes device-level configuration simpler with the addition of property sheets. And if a network manager wants to get help, Xylan added an online user guide and context-sensitive HTML search capability.
