An interesting mad cow disease related story.

I once read an article (somewhere) about the whole Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSE) business, and in it were details about how some African tribe was believed to have contracted Creuzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) by means of their ancient ritual of consuming cremated remains of deceased tribe members' brains.

The article went on to say (in effect) -- before all of us Westerners say "Yuck !" and "How could anyone do something like this ?" -- be aware that scientists believe some cases of CJD in Europe and the U.S. may have been caused by people having cornea transplants from cadavers ! (They even used the word "cannibalism" to characterize cornea transplants).

(Having studied at least some biology, I think I remember that one's retina (and optic nerves) can be considered extensions of brain material (since they are connected all the way), so I guess the thinking is that corneas are contaminated by their proximity to the retina (?)).

Any doctors reading this ?

Jon.
