You describe exactly what happened in 1973/74 with the Nifty Fifty. I had some retirement savings money in a pooled fund that was managed by what was at that time Wall Streets hottest firm. It owned mostly nifty fifty stocks. The fall was so deep that it took years for me to get back to my original investment. Of course, there was an outside force (the energy crisis) that contributed to the fall at that time.
