Clark,

1) Good question about duty cycles. Ideally, you would like to keep a profitable line running 24hrs/day, but in practice this is rarely realized. In terms of lithography tools, I have seen quoted MTBFs for scanners like almost 100hrs for ASML and 250hrs for SVGL. Someone who has worked as a lithographer will hopefully comment about stepper uptime and MTBF.

2) There are tradeoffs involved between using a higher average power laser and the higher throughput allowed using such a laser on the correct tool. The tradeoff between maybe a 20% higher throughput and associated higher consumable costs must be determined on a product line basis I'm sure. This is what they were alluding to in the paragraph you find worrisome. BTW, here is a stepper introduced by Canon the other day which sounds like a good candidate for a high average power laser.

3) There are many labs around the world using excimer lasers of many types. There have probably been over 50 companies that have made excimer lasers. Three of them are supplying lasers for photolithography.

4) Don't know. A different laser numbering system and scanner naming system is possible.

5) Nice prediction.

It is very difficult to have an intelligent argument with phantoms on Yahoo through a third party. I hope you can extract some quality facts and compare them to what is known.

I'm going to let Cymer, Komatsu, and Lambdas' actual numbers talk to me and tell me how things are going.

Bob

PS Here is an earlier post on this thread that should be read carefully. Cymer will not have 98% of installs and 86% of shipments going forward. It seems these facts are forgotten frequently and people take them to mean Cymer will do poorly as a company.

Different post on Cymer's competitive position at a point in time.
