GPS news. TRIMBLE INKS DEAL FOR FIRST STAGE OF RUSSIAN LAND REFORM PROJECT

SUNNYVALE, Calif., May 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Trimble (Nasdaq: TRMB) announced today that it has been awarded the World Bank funded contract to supply GPS survey equipment and services for the Land Reform Implementation Support (LARIS) Project, which is the first phase of the implementation of the Russian Land Reform Program.

Trimble's GPS equipment will be used to conduct formal "cadastral" (legal boundary) surveys to provide the basis for a new automated legal land register system, enabling property details and ownership rights to be registered. The new automated system gives information on the owner, date of purchase, location and size of the parcel, mortgages and other servitudes on the property.

"Trimble's GPS equipment has been certified as a means of geodetic measurement by the Russian Committee for Standardization, Metrology and Certification (GosStandard of Russia)," said Victor Kislov, Director of The Russian Center for Scientific Support of Land Reform (RosNic "Zemlya"). "We have strict procurement and precisely defined technical specifications; Trimble's equipment is fully compliant."

"The Land Reform Project is a true milestone in Russian history. By developing an infrastructure to support national land registration, the Russian Government hopes to create a legal foundation for future economic growth," said Chuck Joseph, Trimble's Executive Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Field Operations. "We are honored that Trimble GPS will be an integral part of this critical infrastructure development project."

World's Largest Cadastral Surveying Project
An initial World Bank funding commitment of $80 million for LARIS, which incorporates several other aspects in addition to GPS surveying, covers the period to 1999 and will be supplemented by funding from the Russian Federation. The estimated scope of the Land Reform program is staggering. The 89 republics and regions that make up the 6.6 million square miles (1.71 billion hectares) of the Russian Federation covers 1/8th of the entire world's land and includes 11 million parcels. Upon completion, the Russian Automated Land Information System (LIS) network will be the largest in the world.

Trimble Products and Services
Under the terms of the contract, Trimble will provide millimeter-accurate GPS receivers (single and dual frequency), GPS antennas, handheld dataloggers, communication radios, computer hardware, Russian language software and product manuals, training and installation support services.

4000SSi
Trimble's advanced, dual-frequency Geodetic Surveyor SSi receivers will be used for both long baseline and very short occupation GPS surveys. These receivers feature Trimble's proprietary Super-trak(TM) technology which enables the receivers to track GPS satellites signals effectively, even in many locations and situations previously considered difficult for GPS receivers to operate.

4600LS Surveyor
Introduced in late 1995, Trimble's 4600LS combines a single-frequency GPS receiver, antenna and power supply together in one convenient, economical unit. The units are extremely small and light-weight (3.7 lbs., including C-size batteries) and easy to use. The 4600LS is the only GPS surveying receiver that is capable of operating over the temperature extremes of -40C to +65C, an important consideration for use in Russia. Their very low cost and high-performance ability provide outstanding value for performing short-to-medium baseline surveys for the Russian Land Reform project.

GPSurvey Office Software
GPSurvey V2.0 office software will be used to process GPS satellite data collected in the 4600LS and Geodetic Surveyor SSi GPS receivers. The software will be supplied in Russian, complete with Russian language manuals. This Windows-based software will enable the determination of precise geodetic coordinates, which will subsequently be entered into the Land Information System network.
