Anyone doing any real work in the erp/backoffice space could have told you about an artificial acceleration in the business in the 1995 to 1998 timeframe that would see an inevitable slowdown. no i didn't have the courage to short PSFT, but I did with Baanf, JDEC and SAP (still short). here is an ancient post of mine from the baan thread: Message 2287132 The front office market is larger than the erp market and you will soon see what the outlook looks like.
