But reality has brought more pain than profits for hedge funds that have tried to short Internet stocks. Instead, many Internet stocks rose fivefold, tenfold or even more.

And that wasn't what the shorts expected. "People just kept getting run over," says a San Francisco-based hedge fund manager, who says he isn't shorting any Net stocks these days. "There's plenty of stuff you can own and make a lot."
