In case anyone missed it here is the NTT leak listing associated manufacturers. It certainly appears that CDMAone experience is VERY important. NOTICE that ALL the Japanese companies chosen have CDMAone licenses. NEC and Fujitsu have infrastructure licenses. Matsuchita, Mitsubishi, NEC, Denso,Toshiba, and Sharp ALL have subscriber licenses. NOKIA DOES NOT have an infrastructure license. NONE of these companies have ASIC licenses.

It's probably safe to presume that many of these companies will have no choice but to rely upon Qualcomm for help with developing product and that we therefore shouldn't be too worried about WCDMA. Gloating might in fact be the correct attitude..:-)

Tokyo, April 29 (Bloomberg) -- The following stories appeared in major Japanese newspapers this morning: NTT DoCoMo to Procure Phone Equipment From 11 Makers, Nikkei Says

NTT Mobile Communications Network Inc. has reached an agreement with 11 Japanese, U.S. and European manufacturers to procure equipment for its next-generation cellular phone operation, slated to begin in 2001, the Nihon Keizai newspaper reported, citing unidentified persons familiar with the company. The companies include Lucent Technologies Inc., NEC Corp., Fujitsu Ltd., Matsushita Communications Industrial Co., Ericsson AB, Toshiba Corp., Sharp Corp., Denso Corp., Mitsubishi Electric Corp., Motorola Inc. and the Nokia Group. NTT DoCoMo will invest 2 trillion yen ($16.8 billion) in the project during the first several years, starting this fiscal year, the newspaper said.
