The thinking (which I don't necessarily endorse) is that people will want email and internet delivered over a handheld. Since Palm, Nokia, and Qualcomm have a lock on the vast majority of devices at this time, WCOM is looking for a cheap alternative and a different delivery mechanism. Even if the technology doesn't take off, it's not a bad investment since paging systems are cash cows and their spectrum can be used for other purposes.
