Having lived all over the world, and a very big chunk of it in Canada, I've found this discussion very amusing. I have met many Canadians who love America and many Americans who love Canada. The two countries have much in common. However, there are some deep differences among the two nation which look deceptively superfacial at the first glance. It is rather hard to describe them, unless you've spent a few years on each side. Taken to the extreme, they will look like "Americans are still the Wild West Cowboys and Canadian are even more 'cool and level headed' than the Brits ever were", with all the positives and negatives that this caricaturization implies.

BTW, if there really was no support for the monarchy in Canada and Australia, then it would have been over long time ago. For all practical purposes, the British monarchy (or England) has no power whatsoever over either country. The monarchy is kep for two reasons: (a) for cultural and historical reasons [no reason to rock the boat if they have no power] and (b) (at least in Canada) As a way to distinguish the national identity from the neighbouring countries.

cheers,
