If you want glizt, MC-D,B-King, traffic jams and golfing built around ruins go to Cancum (hotel zone)... If you love clean, safe walking, 2nd class bus travel, great street vendors (6 trips and never been sick), cheap eats, cheap beer (Corona is 99 cents a 6 pack in the grocery),great shopping and friendly people go downtown Cancun and stay there ! Read Frommers too.

If you want real travel go to Merida, the capitol of the Yucatan..safe,clean and very cheap...The Best Western was $21 a night last year. We stayed in a clean 3 story renovated hotel 1 block from downtown for $17/night (for 2) ..wonderful...nice pool.. down the block a real nice hotel sold 3 meals for $7 a day (daily specials).. A 4 hour bus ride from Cancun 1st class or about 6hr by 2nd class..cheap and fun travel but slow.. you pass Chichen-Itza ruins both ways..stop there for a 1/2 day. Many important ruins around plus limestone underground wells and national park to the west where you can see real flamingos by the milions. Weekends are booming with locals selling all kinds of food on the streets and in the parks. Respond for more info......I love the place and plan to retire there in 5 years (2 months a year). Beach is about 20 miles away so stop back in Cancun for a couple of days for a tan.
