Broadcast.com is talking like the bandwidth threshold necessary for widespread use of digital video over the Internet is very close.

From Broadcast.com's perspective, it doesn't matter whether that broadband market opens as a function of improving compression, rapid penetration of DSL and cable modems, or a combination of both, so long as the quality of its content feeds moves quickly to the VHS threshold and beyond, Wagner noted. Already, he said, codecs (encoder/decoders) are delivering VHS-level streaming over 300-kbps pipes.

"I've seen compression technology in operation that supports streaming at 30 frames per second at full-screen resolution over 100-kbps links," he added. "That tells me my company will be able to reach an ever larger market with high-quality audio/video content, no matter what the ultimate local-access speeds are."

BSkyB Says Good Response To Digital TV offer >BSY

LONDON (Dow Jones)--British Sky Broadcasting Group PLC (BSY) Monday said its digital TV service, Sky digital, has had the fastest launch of any digital platform in the world, signing up more than half a million subscribers since its launch seven months ago.

The statement aims to counter conclusions from a survey by media buying agency CIA MediaLab, which said the company's offer to give away digital TV set - top boxes to attract new subscribers is not living up to expectations.

Rival ONdigital, co-owned by Carlton Communications PLC (CCTVY) and Granada Group PLC (U.GAA), is running a similar offer.

More than a quarter of the people polled by the survey said they would never subscribe to digital TV, CIA MediaLab said.

In a press release, BSkyB said: "The response to Sky's new offer of a free decoder and (satellite) dish, 40% off standard British Telecommunications calls, and free access to the Internet has been extraordinarily good. We anticipate that consumers will continue to transfer to digital, given the benefits and new services which it brings."

ONdigital declined to comment on the survey.

At 1030 GMT, shares in BSkyB were at 593.5 pence, up 4.2% from Friday's close of 569.5 pence.
