Baron's own follow-up...

Barron's cover story, "The Winners are..." presented an international telecommunications forum featuring a trio of experts -- Oscar Castro of Montgomery Asset Management, Marc Gabelli of Gabelli Funds and Jack Grubman of Salomon Smith Barney. The panel discussed the future of the industry -- how many of today's giants will remain after the dust has settled given the current trend for the content providers to get together with the telecom deliverers. The three listed some of their telecom stock favorites.

All of Castro's seven favorites rose on the day. Leading the way was Esat Telecom up 2 1/4 to 43, while AT&T Canada gained 1 7/8 to 58 7/8 and Sprint (PCS Group) jumped 2 to 51 3/8. Half of the six stocks on Gabelli's list were up -- Omnipoint gained 13/16 to 18 7/16, Cable & Wireless PC rose 9/16 to 39 15/16 and Viatel edged up 1/4 to 49 1/2. Seven of Grubman eight favorites finished in the positive today. Level 3 Communications soared 6 3/8 to 75 3/4, Qwest Communications jumped 2 9/16 to 45 1/16 and MCI rose 1 9/16 to 91 5/16.
