It stinks and it clearly is a bad sign. As much as I'd like to say 'Oh, Lotus is just stupid,' well, they didn't get to be Lotus by being stupid.

On the other hand, maybe most people with Netware use Groupwise and Lotus does not believe they can penetrate those markets. But in general, it's always better to have your platform written for.

There's enough good signs around to keep me very bullish on Novell, but it's just not the type of think you want to see.

Here's my perspective:

Novell is working on moving away from a server-centric world (NetWare) to a directory-centric world (NDS) as it's major revenue stream. In the next 12-18 months, Novell itself will be developing products that will NOT require NetWare -- but they will require NDS.

If Lotus Notes can run on NT, Linux or whatever, that's OK. Novell is currently working on something called Virtual Replica which will allow NDS to read information stored in other directories (Lotus included). In this way, companies will migrate their Lotus Notes to NT/LINUX servers and NDS will still be able to manage them.

It's not as big a deal as its being made out to be. It's definitely NOT a good thing but I don't think it's a sign of bad things to come. In fact, this could turn out to be a blessing in disguise when some of these companies currently using Notes of cc:Mail take a look at GroupWise to handle their messaging duties in their Novell Networks.

Interesting to note that Lotus wanted to buy NOVL in the early 90's...Lotus management have also had their share of problems with their boss IBM. IMHO their decision is going to hurt them more than anything else..

However the Caldera story, small as it is, really surprised me. I've always thought Caldera was getting a lot of support from NOVL, and thought at some point NOVL would buy them out...Have we reached Noorda's exit point?

Don't forget, IBM's WebSphere AppServer will be shipping with NetWare by next year, so the Domino news doesn't mean that IBM is backing away from Novell. As Peter said, there's already an excellent messaging server for NetWare, so that space is covered. If I had to choose between yet another message server and the ecommerce platform that has the full weight of IBM behind it, I'd pick the latter any day. Fortunately, that's what we've got.

<<To all, please click on and read the site below and comment.>>

Mark this date (and my words), unless Lotus reconsiders this move, two years from now, Papows and Lotus will look back at June 4th as one of the stupidest things that they have ever done. They make a messaging server. They can't wag the dog.
