Does anyone use ADSL? (phone) Is that anywhere close to the speed and cost of cable modems? I've seen $85/month for only 256Kbps on ADSL, while I have 2.5Mbps (well, that's 50x faster than 56k, right?) for $29.95/month.

US West has recently lowered their prices to the reasonable. They offer service in my area (Cox Cable does not yet, for nine more months unless it slips a fourth time), but my line does not "qualify" for some reason. This was a high growth area when this neighborhood was built so they probably used the cheap shortcut technique (which I can't remember the name of) to expand the system here. It's totally incompatible with DSL.

No one gives a damn about speeding service here, though. It's the Phone Company on one side and the Cable Company on the other. What regulated monopoly that you've ever dealt with gave a shit what you thought? They should both rot in hell.

Here's the US West site. Good luck finding the total price you'd pay. If you can figure it out, tell me. I'd be interested in knowing. It's hard enough to figure out that I'm sure it ain't accidental...
