For IBM, that meant pressuring it to stop shipping computers with its own OS/2 operating system and a series of business programs that competed with Microsoft Office. "They repeatedly used the (computer maker) relationship to apply pressure," said Garry Norris, who was IBM's primary negotiator with Microsoft Corp. in the mid-1990s. Company memos and letters tendered in court also offered dramatic new insight into Microsoft's tactics. According to IDC estimates, Microsoft's Exchange software took an early lead with 1.9 mln new users in the United States, the technology data and research company said. It was followed "very closely" by IBM CORP's Lotus Domino/Notes with 1.4 mln new users and NOVELL INC's GroupWise with 1 mln new users.
