Fantasies of New York in the 50's, indeed...I have memories: of the spiked high heels that ruined your feet, of the girdles that squeezed your guts out, of the air raid drills, and -- best of all -- of the maps (obligingly published in the local papers) of the designated "escape routes" out of Manhattan, in case of atomic attack. To this day, I can still see, in my mind's eye, all those enraged Manhattanites locked in their cars, spilling off the overloaded George Washington Bridge --splash! -- into the Hudson...And those of us who had no cars -- the majority, of course -- watching from the river bank, chopping down the Riverside Park trees to build rafts... Never could understand those fifties nostalgia dances. Bar none, absolutely the worst decade I ever lived through..
