<If they [Dell] haven't at least signed on for a look, then they're fools.>

Doesn't Dell work on a pure BTO model, which would mean that Dell needs assurance from its suppliers that the parts they order will be in on time?

Seems that betting on AMD to deliver on-time with volumes is like betting on the sun to shine in the Pacific Northwest. There's been way too many rainy days when it comes to AMD's execution that Dell just can't tolerate with their BTO model.

Kap - RE: AND and Dell

I personally don't expect Dell to use any K6-X chip and I don't expect them to use the K7 until 1H 2000, if they do decide to use it.

I say this because Dell's model requires quantities of products to be available at any given time at practically any given quantity. At this point, only Intel can do this. AMD won't be able to do this with only FAB 25 running. FAB 30 should, if they can make anything there, be able to guarantee supplies with the help of FAB 25.

The day DELL decides to use an AMD chip will be the day the world sees AMD as a real, capable company.

Kap,

" I wonder how much discount does Dell get on Pee-III for doing the "Intel
inside" job."

Dell is Intel's most favored customer so I am sure they get good discounts. But, the issue is probably more of market segmentation than pricing. Dell caters to high-end users. Dell announcing a K7 system is probably the biggest boost that AMD can get and will change their valuation overnite (would call for some serious call buying of this happens). There have been some persistant rumors on this one for some time but I will be surprised to have Dell showing up at K7 launch time.
