John, considering that Brad bought shares on the open market at 15, it seems very unlikely to me that he would accept a buyout offer unless it was significantly higher than 15.

About 2 years ago, when the stock price was much higher, Brad was often quoted in news articles talking about industry consolidation, and how it is necessary. This led me to believe that being acquired was on his mind. I assume that he will be receptive to a takeover when the price is right.

The right price will be somewhere north of 15. Right now, we are so far below 15 that I don't think anybody is likely to pay such a large premium for the stock.

I would wait until we get into the teens before getting excited about the prospect of a takeover.

John,

How well would a Mattson assimilation fit in with those companies best able to take Mattson's tools and hit the ground running? Assume rock bottom minimum MTSN gets scooped up for $25/share, then I figure that the lucky bidder will need about $400 million. A quick look at front end equip vendors with that kind of cash yields Applied Materials, Novellus and Lam. There have been a long standing rumors that Novellus and Lam might merge, or that Novellus might pick up SFAM-IPEC. AMAT has picked up a few small companies (Opal, Orbot and Obsidian), each less than $200 million. Will they pony up twice that for Mattson? Besides, can they my Mattson since the company name does not start with an "O"?
