why would MicroGates buy 10% of this Proginet Outfit ?

My guess is that their cross-platform products are helpful in selling NT to shops that are using IBM mainframes and Unix systems. Judging from the white paper on their site, their "SecurPass" system offers features that make SNA Server a better solution for some sites. (And a further guess: ToySoldier could tell us why this might indicate a hole in Microsoft offerings.)

Microsoft often invests in or buys outright small companies that offer technologies that Microsoft doesn't have. The question is often, "Will it be cheaper and quicker to buy them out or to copy -- umm, I mean 'embrace and extend' what they're doing?"
