Venezuelan Oil Workers Vote to Strike on Monday Over Move to Freeze Pay
Venezuelan Oil Workers Vote to Strike on Monday (Update3)
(Updates throughout with workers voting to strike. Drops
outdated material.)

Caracas, June 9 (Bloomberg) -- Venezuelan oil workers voted
to go on strike Monday to protest the state oil company's freeze
on the salaries of its 33,000 hourly workers.

The country's largest oil union voted for a nationwide
strike at state oil company Petroleos Venezolanos SA. The strike
could present President Hugo Chavez with his first labor dispute
and could disrupt oil shipments to the U.S. Venezuela is the
largest foreign supplier of oil to the U.S.
''PDVSA has all day Sunday to negotiate'' a settlement, said
Carlos Ortega, the president of Fedepetrol, the country's largest
oil union. ''But we're on (for a strike) at 6 a.m. Monday.''

Up to 60,000 workers could take part in the strike, said
Bladimiro Blanco, under-secretary general of Fedepetrol, the
country's largest oil union.

Venezuela produces about 2.72 million barrels a day of oil,
with about 60 percent being sold to companies in the U.S. A
strike would have an immediate impact on supplies and prices.
''PDVSA may have its contingency plan ready,'' said Ortega.
''We'll make sure it doesn't work.''
