Egypt and Sudan discuss oil cooperation

CAIRO, June 10 (Reuters) - Egyptian Oil Minister Hamdi el-Banbi met visiting Sudanese Foreign Minister Mostafa Osman Ismail on Thursday to discuss oil cooperation.

An oil ministry statement said the two ministers discussed the ''different activities and petroleum capabilities available to both countries amid recent discoveries.''

It did not specify what discoveries were meant.

Sudan expects to start oil exports in July or August on completion of a pipeline from its southern oilfields to the Red Sea.

The statement quoted Ismail as saying Sudan was eager to co-operate with Egypt in all economic fields especially in the oil and natural gas sectors. Ismail, visiting Cairo for the second time in three weeks, held talks with his counterpart Amr Moussa on Wednesday.

Egypt and Sudan have been trying to improve relations that have been strained since 1995 when Cairo accused Khartoum of giving refuge to Moslem militants who tried to kill President Hosni Mubarak in Addis
Ababa in 1995. Sudan denied the charge.
