brees you once asked me what I liked about the Clinton presidency. This situation on guns that happened last night is about the best example I can come up with. In a nutshell the house tried to water down the gun bill with NRA-inspired loopholes. One of them involved these gunshows (which are a huge loophole right there) where the senate wanted registrations required if more than 50 guns were sold. The house changed it into some number of vendors participating. There is no reason for that. I believe vast numbers of american people are against the NRA on these gun matters but for years have felt stifled as if "there is nothing we can do" because the NRA lobby is so strong. In my mind there is no reason that guns should be sold without registration, of course this would never go through but thats the way I see it and I suspect the majority of people in the US lean my way. We require registration of cars and fishing licenses, give me a break. If everybody had to register their guns then the police would be able to pin down huge numbers of crimes to the individual guns involved. This is just common sense. But anyway, that wasn't in the bill - only background checks and some minimal precautions for these gun shows which are way out of line. Clinton did the right thing just as he did with the gay appointment, he told those extreme-faction controlled nuts he isn't going to stand for this. That is what I want in a president and we haven't had that in a while. Unfortunately there is all this other bad stuff - but on issues Clinton is right on.
