re:Let me also add that AMD's common stock price is rapidly going nowhere - are we all in for another "surprise" from our illustrious management?

2 reasons:
1). It's become clearer by the day that Q2 will be another disastrous qtr for AMD, much worse than was expected at the beginning of the quarter, what with unsold inventory, loss of mkt. share to Intel, major problems with K6-3, all resulting in lower ASPs.

2). K7 is going nowhere fast, due mostly to the lack of infrastructure in place for the next 3-6 months. Then add in the higher costs & complexities associated with manufacturing. Not even the mkt. is buying into the K7 hype this time, like they did with K6.

At $17-$20, the risk/reward of AMD is not very appealing right now, imo.

Reginald,

Re:" Does anybody besides myself feel disturbed by AMD? "

I think are MAJOR concerns in addition to what you have posted:

1. Price declines - The majority of AMDs parts are still K6.
The price in volumes will be less than the $78 last quarter.
So even with 6M units sold - we are likely to have a huge loss!!!

2. Stock price - Although this quarters numbers will likely be awfull the stock price should reflect the future. And it has been stuck in the $16-20 range. Clearly the big boys have no confidence - and who can blame them.

3. Lack of K6-3's. Yes it is very worrying. In addition folks like GTW are not even offering the K6III. Suggests one to wonder if they can even yield them.

4. 0.18 micron status - Intel has started production - where is AMD.
Some 0.18 parts should have dribbled out by end of this quarter.

5. Dresden and Cu - folks who are knowledgeable on process are amazed that AMD will try to bring up 2 0.18 processess. With their poor history of execution - folks are likely to wait to buy after real parts ship in volume and not just on the hype.

6. AMD lack of communication - AMD sucks in terms of getting the news out - good or bad. The financial community has been left hanging too long too many times to upgrade unless the evidence is overwhelming.

7........

I could go on.......

Regards,

Kash

Reginald - RE: "As example, the latest Micro Center catalog features the latest Intel processors in PCs made by Compaq, Hewlett Packard and eMachines, but there is no K6-III PC to be found! I find this startling in view of the fact that the K6-III has been in production since middle February - right?"

Yeah, I have noticed the same scary thing.

As far as I know, the only way to get the K6-III from an OEM is through one of those Built to Order stands at Best Buy and possibly Circuit City. Actually, I think Compaq is the only OEM to offer it.

Now, a 500MHz K6-III is supposed to come out next week, but what good will it do if OEMs aren't using the K6-III? Maybe they were afraid it wouldn't sell because it has been only 400 and 450MHz, or the same MHz as the K6-2. I have no idea, but I would really like to know.

BTW, you can purchase a Compaq PC over the net w/a K6-III in it today, but I don't really care about that, anymore. I won't be satisfied now until I see it on store shelves.

Let's see now... K6-2 pilling up on the dock, prices doing a nosedive, K63s nowhere to be found.... So it looks like Paul was right all along!
