I do think you've hit on something I, too, am guilty of -- the "gotcha" element which this thread has at times fallen into. Is it possible to have a helpfully oriented G&S thread, one which treats those who stray from the true path as otherwise good people deserving support and gentle correction rather than sinners deserving to be held up in front of the church and publicly tossed into the burning fires of the lower realm?

I would consider "style" in both senses, Rambi, although my preference is for the second sense: the "broader concept of what makes it all work or not." The problem is, of course, that "style" in the first sense -- the "technical Strunk and White" sense -- has a great deal to do with whether style, considered in the second sense, "works or not." <g>

To be more precise about it: it might be nice (wrong word, but I'm in a hurry) to talk about good or bad writing. For example, you might take a prose passage you especially like, or dislike, and explain why, and how, you think it "works" -- or doesn't "work."

Just an idea.
