The Creative Unified effort is a two pronged attack. The first issue is that it addresses a weakness of all non-3dfx based cards since Glide is better/easier/faster than OpenGl or D3D. However, more importantly, it pollutes the image of Glide in that it creates the "multiple incompatible versions" cloud over the API, much like Microsoft did with Sun's Java. If you are an uninformed user with a Creative card and you try to use Unified there is a good possibility that it isn't going to work correctly or it will have slight problems. So these users get in their heads that Glide is pretty bad from the start and won't demand Glide-supported cards in the future.
