YES!!!! Brabazon- a male biographer- was still stuck in that primary role of women mindset! Heilbrun feels that those early women writers had to break free from the mold in order to create. That it took that violent severing--- spinsterhood, or illegitimate child, or lesbianism--some act that removed them from the normal societal expectations- to free them then to write. Without their giving us new options, we end up like - oh shoot- the one that walked into the sea because she couldn't see a way out of her life. (Alexa!!!!)

Now Va Woolf was lucky enough to have Leonard to take care of her and nurture her talent, but that was unusual. And Gertrude Stein had really a man's expectations of poor Alice B. but overall, all those wonderful women gave us permission to be other things, to travel different paths?
