YES!!!! Brabazon- a male biographer- was still stuck in that primary role of women mindset! Heilbrun feels that those early women writers had to break free from the mold in order to create. That it took that violent severing--- spinsterhood, or illegitimate child, or lesbianism--some act that removed them from the normal societal expectations- to free them then to write.
