Nah, didn't grow up in.. ended up in. Am crawling my way out of. I was staunchly middle class, but the child of poor, hardworking depression parents. We always lived simply and below the standard of their income and those around us. They instilled a great respect of what you earn and what you have in us. And flash didn't count for squat. Saving and investing were stressed.

But I am forty. I've been poorer longer than I grew up middle class. And my grandparents in Alabama were dirt farmers. The whole feel of them and the surrounding folks influenced me a lot. It's third world usa in a southern holler. I imagine I talk more like I come from that than from the other now. It's more immediate to me. And those are my people much more than the people I grew up with.
