Tobin's political ambitions are a joke. All of the posturing about the Great Leader standing up to Inco is for home town consumption. He has done more to damage development in Newfoundland and Labrador than anyone knows. Who in their right mind would invest in a place run by a small-pond dictator.

Tobin's run for the leadership of the federal Liberals will be that of the "favourite son" type of campaign. He doesn't have the linguistic prerequisites for the job. Newfoundland is a nice place, but the Prime Minister is going to come from central Canada (most likely Quebec).

The Liberal Party is not about to give up power. They are not about to hand the government over to someone to whom stubbornness is his prime personality trait. As Prime Minister, Tobin's lack of pragmatism would make him incapable of mediating the never ending inter-provincial scraps that make our politics what they are.
