Hmmm..yes...notions of "personal space"... also an interesting topic... I would agree that definitions of trespassing and personal space are largely determined by an individual's perception... I've often been told by non-Canadians that I tolerate a much smaller personal space and more eye contact when speaking compared to most Canadians that they've encountered... I'm always aware of the closeness but it doesn't bother me because I was conditioned to such differences when I was growing up.
[Just a little EDIT here... and here we go with another can-of-worms... Canadian as opposed to non-Canadians... I should have worded that differently, but I'll leave it as it stands... I think you catch my drift...:-}

As for "trespassing" in the sense of "ownership" of a space, I tend to have a fairly lenient view about what consititutes trespassing on what I will refer to as "my" property... hot air balloonists occasionally touching down in the fields here, people walking their dogs along a forest path out in the back forty, snowmobilers taking shortcuts to the main trail, neighbouring farmers pursuing escaped cattle that have wandered onto the property....all of those things are cool. I believe that many farmers have similar feelings about property rights/trespassing, etc... Many regard themselves as stewards of the land and don't really mind the odd wanderer across the property so long as they stick to a trail, don't leave gates to fields open, don't shoot at livestock, don't drive ATVs over young trees or seeded fields, and don't spy on you when you're sunbathing in the nude... (oops!! where did that come from??!!).. <g>

I guess it all boils down to what Edwarda has added to the debate... it is "respect" that counts... Having respect for the thoughts, actions, intentions of others... Regarding to the debate about imposition of ideology/religion, it isn't really the "message" that I object to, but the manner of its delivery. To my mind, it's not really much different than someone on an ATV... If they stick to the trail, that's fine... but if they start making circles in my grain fields... Well, look out... After all, it's always open season on Alien Invaders around these parts... ;-}>
