That looks like a better analysis.

If you want to be sure to get the right parts... check
gigabuys.com. They have Crucial Technology 66Mhz NP 3.3v 32MB SODIMMs for $42 and 64MB for $77.

They don't explicitly state Inspiron 3500 upgrade however it's
listed under "Dell system upgrades" so it looks like a safe
bet.

As far as intentional rip-off.. have you checked competitor
pricing for factory installed memory upgrades?

For the Gateway solo 2500:

32MB $0
64MB $100
96MB $200
128MB $300

Sound familiar?

Don't assume Dell is gouging where competitors aren't. There is
a cost associated with installation, testing, burn-in and warranty
(the more memory and modules, failure rates increase).
