*Qwest Offers To Buy U S West, Frontier

DENVER, June 13 (Reuters) - Qwest Communications International Inc. said Sunday it offered to buy Baby Bell U S West Inc. and long-distance provider Frontier Corp. for $55 billion in cash and stock, attempting to break up rival Global Crossing Ltd.'s plans to buy both companies.

In a bid to create U.S. telecommunications giant, Qwest said it would pay up to $80 per share in its common stock for U S West and $20 per share in cash and $55 per share in stock for Frontier.

[[Through the marvels of editing, I just caught the second shoe. Frontier too, eh? Well... my question below still stands, although I'm sure that now we can expect some bifurcated answers.]

HairyWho,

That could wind up being only a momentary southpaw stance by the Nach. The Nunz is a good read at such ploys. Let's see what the other terms are when the article is released.

Question: Let's get a show of hands. How may here in this forum would rather see QWST, even if only in some perverse way, be successful in their move on USW? How many here would rest more comfortably if the Nunz had to give up this "jewel" to the Nach, in other words? Curious.

Me? I like the global playing field, personally, where the keys to the kingdom are readily within this company's reach. I don't particularly like the idea of them taking their eye off the submarine action, in this regard. FRO was, in the end, what they needed to begin covering the domestic front. USW is a mixed bag, as far as I'm concerned. It could work out okay, over the longer term, but at what price to the Company's other potential gains where they have already developed what is, in my opinion, a commanding lead? The USW deal, if GBLX were to be successful, is not as sure a slam-dunk as many would have us believe, IMO.

I've seen enough RBOC bureaucracy-induced entanglements and local regulatory snafus to last me several lifetimes. Rebirths and newly enlightened directions on the part of the recently self-proclaimed Renaissance Telco, notwithstanding. I think I've said enough. What do you think?

[Late Edit: This thing between the Nach and the Nunz may be more than I first implied in a former, and more humorous tone. Will QWST next take a run at GBLX?]
